Grants Factory - EPSRC Mock Panel - 4 June 2014

Prof Sarah Spurgeon
 Next month’s Grants Factory session will provide an insight into how the EPSRC assesses applications. This is third of the three ‘mock panels’ (there have already been ones focusing on AHRC and ESRC), and will consist of two parts:

  • Firstly, two experienced panellists, Prof Sarah Spurgeon (EDA) and Prof Simon Thompson (Computing) will give an overview of the priorities and processes of the EPSRC, outlining how your proposal will be assessed;
  • Secondly, Sarah and Simon will lead a ‘mock’ panel, at which you will assess, discuss and rank a number of real applications, and decide which should be funded. This is invaluable to help understand the issues and difficulties faced by the EPSRC panels, which will, in turn, help you to focus and draft your application more effectively.

Thoughts on Working with Alternative Funders

Beth Breeze
I was speaking to Dr Beth Breeze yesterday after I had advertised the latest Grants Factory workshop on 'Alternative Sources of Funding'. Beth is the Director of the Centre for Philanthropy, and has been incredibly successful at working with charities, trusts and individuals. She has had experience from both sides of the funding fence: she began her career working as a fundraiser for the youth homelessness charity, the Cardinal Hume Centre and spent a decade working in a variety of fundraising, research and charity management roles, before co-founding the Centre in 2008.

Given this experience, she's someone who is worth listening to when she talks about the specific issues around seeking funding from non-standard sources, and in how to work with the funders for your mutual benefit.

Grants Factory: Alternative Sources of Funding for your Research

Alison Coles
Whilst many academics and researchers have a good understanding of the traditional sources of funding for their work, they may be less aware of ‘alternative’ sources. There’s a confusing funding landscape out there, but Kent has in place a supportive framework of linked services to help you benefit from it.

FTU Bids for Regional Study

The VC and PVCs of FTU, getting into the Dickensian spirit
It may surprise readers to learn that the announcement of an AHRC/Design Council funding call focussed on Bristol/Bath was greeted with fevered excitement at Fundermental Towers University. You might reasonably have thought that, whilst FTU had expanded its sphere of influence to the very edges of the Kentish peninsular through its strategic 'R2D2' collaboration with Ebbsfleet White Horse (Unrampant), Snodhurst and Deangate Ridge Golfing Academy, this call was too geographically remote to be of interest to FTU. Not so.
